Ink Slingers to offer outlet for creative writing

Sophomore English major Jeanette Vigliotti was surprised at the lack of creative writing outlets when she arrived at Flagler College, so she decided to start one herself. Ink Slingers was born a year later.

Student Government Association and the administration have approved the creative writing club. With faculty and fellow students, Vigliotti designed the club as a safe haven for creativity.

Vigliotti wants to give students the freedom to share their work and ideas with other writers, and provide an outlet to begin publishing. Vigliotti also plans to work with The Flagler Review to give members a chance to submit work through the club.

Throughout the year, the club plans to present a variety of speakers, such as Dr. Constantine Santas, first head of the English department. He will discuss how his experience with the creative writing club at Knox College helped him as a writer.

The club is planning an intercollegiate creative writing seminar. It wants to gather professors and students from colleges around the area, such as Stetson, Eckerd and the University of Florida, to talk about, and work on, writing.

“I can’t believe that this is finally approved after all the work everyone did over the summer with Dr. Andreu and Saunders and just talking about what we can do and how to get people interested. I’m just so stoked,” Vigliotti said.

The club plans to hold regular meetings starting next semester.
