Short SGA meeting had a lot to say

All clubs approved by Council except for Kiteboarding

David Matulewicz, Student Government Association President, held a less than 15-minute SGA meeting this Tuesday, Oct. 20.

The agenda read: Committee reports, Board reports and general announcements.

During the President’s report, Matulewicz announced, “all the clubs that we approved through the Student Government have been approved by the President’s Advisory Council, so they are now officially clubs, with the exception of the Kiteboarding Club.”

Matulewicz said the Kiteboarding Club is still pending because the college is looking into whether or not it is feasible for their insurance.

He also said that SGA no longer approves sports clubs under Student Services. The clubs will now be approved as intramurals and are no longer eligible for club grants.

Community Service committee has many events coming up. They are currently hosting a Teddy Bear Drive, which they have extended until Oct. 30. The donation boxes are located in the student center and in the lobby of the library. They have collected 15 bears so far and hope to collect more by the end of the month.

“The bears are going to the local police department,” said Nicole Gauthier, second committee chair of Community Service. “When they go to any kind of situation with young children, they give it to them for comfort.”

The next event is Trick-or-Treating for the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind, which is Wednesday, Oct. 28. This year, the FEC buildings will be included in the event. SGA will also have a table in the rotunda and will be handing out bags of candy.

“The girls in Ponce have to have a sign by Oct. 24, on their doors, that says DAC,” explained Stephanie Hyland, first committee chair of Community Service. “Then the kids will come that night [Oct. 28] and trick-or-treat.”

Other events coming up for Community Service committee is the March of Dimes, on Nov. 7, Flagler Feeds in November and volunteering at St. Francis House.

Also during the meeting, SGA Advisor and Director of Student Activities Kristin Nelson explained why the pep rally was canceled. “There was some confusion, there were some logistics that were not quite right. We did not want to do something…that was not good to go.” Nelson also said with a little more planning, the event could happen in the future.
