GuluWalk in St. Augustine

Athletes for Africa will be hosting a GuluWalk in St. Augustine on Oct. 20 to spread awareness of conflict in northern Uganda.

Flagler College Student Caitlin Eggimann is responsible for bringing GuluWalk to St. Augustine. “I was looking to participate in GuluWalk, and I contacted the leaders of Athletes for Africa,” Eggimann said, “and they asked me to take the responsibility of being in charge of GuluWalk for St. Augustine.”

GuluWalk is a world-wide organization that raises money for abandoned children in northern Uganda. The GuluWalk Web site information explains how Uganda has been at civil unrest for 21 years. Children are in danger of being abducted by the Lord’s Resistance Army in many towns. Up to 40,000 children walk from their villages to the town of Gulu to avoid harm from the LRA.

St. Augustine is the only town in Florida that holds a GuluWalk. “People don’t think of starting up the GuluWalk,” Eggimann explains, “but if it is there, they will join in.”

Registration for GuluWalk in St. Augustine is Oct. 20 at 10:30 a.m. There is no cost to take part in this event, but fund raising and donations are appreciated. The GuluWalk will begin at 1 p.m. at Francis Field, corner of Orange and Riberia Streets, and end on the Flagler College West Lawn.
