The Gargoyle took second place for Best Independent Online Student Publication in the Society of Professional Journalists 2010 Region 3 Mark of Excellence Awards. In addition, Gargoyle Co-Editor Cal Colgan won first place for Online Opinion and Commentary and third place for Online Feature Reporting, while Co-Editor Caroline Young took third place for Online Feature Reporting.
This is the second Web site award this year for the online-only student publication.
The Gargoyle also published two more award winners: Ryan Buffa and Kristin McIntosh won third place for Online News Reporting, and Jill Houser won first place in Online Feature Reporting.
Also from Flagler, Kristina Haumschild won first place for Television Sports Reporting.
The contest received almost 4,000 entries, and awards were given out at the SPJ Region 3 Conference in Birmingham, Ala., on April 1, 2011.
The first place winners now advance to the national round of judging. Those winners will be announced in early May.
