Former Flagler men’s basketball player signs pro contract

Flagler College alumni and former basketball star, D.J. Ferguson, signed a professional contract in Germany this summer.

Ferguson is now a member of the TSV Oberhaching Deisenhofen Tropics of Germany’s Regionalliga after competing at Eurobasket’s Orlando Summer League, where he impressed the spectators.

Ferguson was a four-year starter for the Flagler College Saints from 2007-11. He averaged 10.9 points and 8.4 assists in his 106-game career. Ferguson scored a career-high 32 points at Rollins College (Dec. 30, 2008) and broke his own school single-game record in 2011, when he dished out 17 assists vs. Augusta State University. Ferguson holds the Peach Belt Conference’s career record for assists with 494, although he only competed in the league for two seasons because Flagler was not yet a Division II participant upon his arrival. He was a third-team all-conference selection in 2009-10. Ferguson holds the school’s season and career records for assists.

Ferguson’s performance in the summer league in July landed him a contract that would allow him to continue his career. Ferguson was a member of Team Vienna, in which he competed against NCAA and NAIA division athletes and was able to lead his team to a championship victory, 59-51, over Team Rome. Ferguson was able to wow the recruits while also being named Co-Most Valuable Player.

The Deisenhofen Tropics made the contact to Ferguson and he took advantage of the opportunity that he had been given and signed the contract after a little deliberation. Deisenhofen plays in the Southeast Division of Regionalliga. Regionalliga is divided into four regions and is composed of 14 teams. The Tropics ended with a 15-11 record and finished in fifth place.

Former Flagler Women’s basketball player, Charlsea Owen, was able to make a trip to Germany for vacation and had the opportunity to watch one of Ferguson’s games.

“He played good, but the style of play was so different there,” Owen said.

While visiting, Owen said that Ferguson often expressed how much he missed home. Most of his communication with friends and family is done through social networks because it is inexpensive, unlike phone usage because he resides in another country.

Prior to the summer league and signing his contract in Germany, Ferguson was a member of the Orlando Venom of the International Basketball League. In 14 games, he averaged 12.9 points, 7.6 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game.
