The Flagler College Saints softball team (27 — 11, 4-4 Peach Belt Conference) are currently on a three-game winning streak and poised to compete in a tough Peach Belt Conference. Currently, the Saints are ranked 5th in the conference.
“The talent is up overall in the Peach Belt,” head coach Kristen Overton said. “We’re not even halfway through the conference games and everyone has at least one loss, whereas last year at this time there were only a couple teams that had a loss.”
The Saints believe that their tough conference schedule will help them in competing for a national championship. Overton and her team feel that if they can stay focused, they can compete with any team in NCAA Div. II.
“We know that we are good, but we have to be consistently good,” Overton said.
The Saints pride themselves on the fact that they have not been swept by any team this season.
“We have not faced a team that we have felt that is better than us,” Overton said.
The Saints were ranked No. 23 in the NFCA Division II Top 25 in early March. But, with recent struggles, losing 4 out of 12 games in March, they’ve fallen out of the top 25.
The three-game winning streak has helped the Saints receive votes to get nationally-ranked again.
Overton said their goals are set high and that they plan to succeed in the post-season tournament play.
“Our goal is to win the national championship and we believe we are good enough to do so,” she said.
