On Oct. 16, the Flagler College surf team competed in the National Scholastic Surfing Association College Men’s and Women’s contest in New Symrna Beach, Fla. Despite the small surfing conditions, the team placed third overall.
The team had several members advance throughout their heats and had two make it to the finals. “The waves sucked and it was challenging out there to get the scores needed to make heats, but at least we had some guys advance to finals,” junior Stephen Kaltenbach said.
Both junior Tom Casse and sophomore Dillon Harrington made it to the final heat against several other surfers from surrounding colleges. With Casse placing second overall and Harrington fifth, the team was satisfied with the results.
“Overall it was a fun day even though the waves weren’t that good for a contest and a lot of us got knocked out early in the rounds,” Dustin Henry said.
The team will be competing in the next NSSA contest next month.
