Junior John Sgromolo helped Flagler Saints baseball hand Florida Tech a big “L” for their season opener this year, as the team rallied back Feb. 4 to defeat the Panthers 3-2.
The baseball team’s win accompanies a 3-0 victory in Savannah on Feb. 1 for the men’s own season opener. The Florida Tech victory had help from Saints’ Will Percy, and pitchers Danny Vliet, Max Rusch and Tyler McKendree. McKendree closed the game, only giving up one hit, and earned himself his first save of the season.
The Saints headed into the Feb. 5 double-header against Florida Tech, but this time earned a different result. The first game at Flagler Stadium sounded more like a home-run derby with a final score of 17-10, Panthers’ victory. Big hitters in the game for the Saints were seniors Jose Rohena, with a grand slam in the fourth, and Travis Coverston, who had two homers.
The Feb. 5 night game was much less offensively charged. The Panthers scored a couple of unearned runs in the third and closed the books with a 5-0 victory over the Saints.
