Flagler’s plate out of danger

Flagler College’s Florida license plate is off of probation and no longer in danger of extinction.

As of April 1, there were 1,101 Flagler plates on the road, surpassing the 1,000 the state of Florida requires in order to keep a specialty license plate.

Flagler, along with most Florida private colleges with license plates, was placed on probation and had been in jeopardy of losing the plate in June if 1,000 were not sold. The college, which began 2006 with 873 plates, crossed the 1,000 mark through a combination of efforts including an iPod giveaway and offering $100 to students, faculty and staff who purchased a plate. The $100 offer will continue until April 15 as the college wants to make sure it stays well above the 1,000 mark.

License plates cost an additional $27 than regular registration, and $25 of that is received by the college for scholarships, student activities and other services.
