Cross country’s Mundy finishes season with flying colors

Flagler College men’s cross country star Corey Mundy has made a name for himself. On Oct. 26, Mundy broke Flagler College’s 8K record with a time of 24:29.75, according to Flagler Athletics.

“Being the present holder of Flagler College’s 8L record is a constant reminder of all the effort I have put forth these past few years,” Mundy said. “The record justifies the daily mental and physical stresses, early morning runs and my existence in a way.”

The record was previously set in 1984 by Troy Holland, who recorded a time of 24:53. Mundy’s finish led the 85-man competition. Flagler came in fourth place overall.

Mundy has been on fire in the month of October. He was selected as the Student-Athlete of the Month, and also achieved numerous feats of excellence including being selected twice as the Student-Athlete of the Week, and earning first-team all-conference honors in the Peach Belt Conference.

Not only did he accomplish such achievements, Mundy became the first of Flagler’s men’s cross country runners to win the PBC Championships.

The 2011 Freshman of the Year capped off his impressive season by competing at the NCAA Division II National Championships. He is the first men’s runner from Flagler College to compete at the NCAA National Championships, where he finished in 180th place, according to Flagler Athletics. He finished the 10K with a time of 33:15.2.

“My goals for next season are relatively simple seeing the progression thus far,” he said. “I would like to lower the record time to a 23:30 range. I would also like to take home another individual champion title with an added team championship title.”
