At the start of their match with the University of Florida on Sept. 16, the men’s and women’s cross country teams had already run 500 miles toward their 1,000-mile season goal — averaging 50 miles per week.
Focusing on the end of the season and the first year in the NCAA, their goal is to qualify runners for the national championships. In the past, they have sent 50 runners to nationals and have come out with nine wins. With the men’s loss of six runners last year, and a mostly unchanged women’s lineup, the team is optimistic.
Coach Dave Williams said, “We aren’t concerned about our win-loss record, our goal this year is to qualify runners for the National Championships.”
If the teams qualify, in the second week of November, they will travel to the U.S. Track and Field Championships, where runners like key newcomer Brett Alvaro, all-conference, all-region senior Stephanie Guy and sophomore Lindsay Dibona look to finish strong.
