Communication department to host film seminar

Thanks to a new cinema and media studies concentration, the communication department at Flagler College will host its first Fall Film Seminar Oct. 27 and 28 on the Flagler campus.

Well-distinguished film figures Barton Palmer, Ashley Maynor, Dustin Miller and Paul Cohen will speak at the seminar, which is sponsored by the college’s communication department.

Keynote speaker Barton Palmer is director of the Film Studies program at Clemson University where he is also a Calhoun Lemon Professor of Literature. An internationally renowned film scholar and author, Palmer will speak about “The Future of Film Studies” Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 4 p.m. in the Flagler College Auditorium, 14 Granada St.

Ashley Maynor, an award-winning documentary filmmaker and educator at Virginia Tech, is the co-founder and program director of Virginia Tech’s Blacksburg Stories Youth Video Workshop. Maynor will screen her movie, “For Memories’ Sake” Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 5 p.m. in Kenan Hall, Room 300.

Dustin Miller, St. Augustine local and Flagler communication alum, will also speak at the event. He is the co-founder of Flesh Profits Nothing, a local production company with an international scope. Miller plans to screen his latest project: “Dane Reynolds Surf Film” Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 5:30 p.m. in Kenan Hall, Room 300.

Paul Cohen has acquired, marketed, and distributed hundreds of films, as well as managed large motion picture companies. He co-founded the Palm Beach International Film Festival and is currently the Director of the Torchlight Program at Florida State University. Cohen will speak about “Getting into Film Graduate School” Wednesday Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. in the Flagler Room, 74 King St. His presentation will be followed by a screening of “the Baader Meinhof Complex.”
