The unforgettable Daytona 500 for all the wrong reasons

BUZZ, BUZZ, BUZZ … “I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen rain. I’ve seen sunny days that I thought would never end.”

I really hate waking up to my alarm clock, especially at 5:30 in the morning, but waking up to the great James Taylor made it just a little bit better.

Today, though, was not just an ordinary day. I didn’t really care what time it was.

It was the day where I would witness the world’s biggest spectacle of racing and rednecks — the Daytona 500.


Flagler’s dance team competition bound

The Flagler College dance team has their first shot competing in a dance competition this year by competing in the Peach Belt Conference Dance competition in Columbus, Ga.

Sarah Gallo, in her first year as head dance coach at Flagler, is excited and anxious for the competition.


Panamanian midfielder arrives at Flagler with high expectations

Jean Carlos Vega just arrived to Flagler College this semester and he’s already showcased his talent. This talented, Panamanian player is just beginning to display what he knows.

Vega started playing soccer when he was just five years old. He went to his father’s games and saw him play. Observing his father’s games motivated him to start playing soccer.



Director of basketball operations works hard to achieve goal of becoming head coach

Walking through the doors of the Flagler College gymnasium is Ryan Vander Wielen’s favorite part about his job.

He likes not having to live the corporate life stuck in a suit and tie, and enjoys getting to wear a t-shirt and basketball shorts to work.

With aspirations to become a head basketball coach at the college level, Vander Wielen is currently the director of basketball operations for both the men’s and women’s teams at Flagler College. He receives a small stipend for his position on the women’s team, but nothing for the men’s.


Men’s tennis team starts season off strong

The Flagler College men’s tennis team started the season off strong with a win against Florida Tech, in Melbourne, Fla.

The No. 12 (Campbell’s/ITA Division II) ranked Saints are currently 3-2, with their most recent win coming against SCAD Savannah Feb. 19.

Head coach Walter Shinn already has his sights set down the line and is prepared to take the team all the way to the Final 16.


Freshman tennis players making transition from Spain

After playing tennis for most of their lives, Esther Santiago and Inigo Landaluce have made the transition from Madrid, Spain to the tennis courts at Flagler College.

Landaluce, who is on the men’s team, and Santiago, who is on the women’s, came to Flagler College to get a degree in Business. So far Flagler has exceeded both their expectations.



Bermuda’s soccer talent arrives to Flagler

Triston Hall is in his first year of college. He plays for the Flagler College soccer team. Although, he has a partner on the team, Marco Warren, who is also from Bermuda, the two have a variety of similarities and differences. Hall, number 18 on the team, is 6 feet 2 inches tall, while Warren, number 23, is 5 feet 4 inches tall. Hall plays as a defender and Warren plays as a forward. The two have been playing together since high school and helped lead their school, Montverde Academy, to being ranked No.
