Alumni Association reaches out to students

By Kayla Hrynyk | gargoyle@flagler.edu

There are a few words that will guarantee an instant response from almost any college student: free, caffeine, and food.

This semester, the Flagler Alumni Association has begun providing all of the above every Wednesday morning during “The Coffee Break.” As a new weekly ritual, students have been swarming the tables filled with fresh brewed coffee and Dunkin’ Donuts between their 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. classes.

Whether shooting commercials for local businesses or filming documentaries, 2007 Flagler College graduate Gareth Cox is making a career out of his passion for cinematography.

Cox, a native of Nottingham, England, says he knew he wanted to pursue a career in TV production since the eighth grade.

“I noticed our school had a closed circuit television network and they would do the news everyday,” Cox said. “I became interested in that just by watching it and I applied for the production side.”

Balances becoming harder to repay thanks to higher interest rates

With financial aid, grants and scholarships, paying for college is a piece of cake, right? Unfortunately, funding your education isn’t as easy as receiving a check from Uncle Sam.

With federal student aid declining and strict limits on federal loans, many students are looking elsewhere to make ends meet when it comes to higher education.

The brown and white dog wound his way among students outside Kenan, sniffing their feet and wagging his tail.

Another little black puppy wriggled and squirmed on the West Lawn, growling playfully as girls pet his belly and scratched behind his ears.

Theo, a 1-year-old pit bull/bulldog mix, and Stickers, a baby Rottweiler mix, are from the Florida East Coast Humane Society, and were visiting Flagler College for the Adopt-A-Pet event Oct. 4, which was sponsored by Flagler’s Public Relations Student Society of America chapter.

Alexandra Laycock, director of special events and volunteer coordinator for the Humane Society, was on hand to answer questions and recruit volunteers.

From internships and graduate school to job placement and career advice, Kathy O’Keefe, director of Alumni Relations, and Joe Riley, assistant director of Alumni Relations, are looking to inspire students through the Student Alumni Association.

“A lot of students graduate and they have questions: What next? What do I do now?” Riley said. “We have alumni out there who work for insurance companies, law firms, business owners, executives. We can answer a lot of questions that the students have.”
