First Days

Day One 5/28
After a grueling eight-hour flight day I arrive in the Los Angeles Airport. I call my landlord and tell him that I am on my way to the apartment when he says that it isn’t ready and won’t be ready till two days from now, my body shuts down in a state of homelessness and panic. He tells me that he can arrange for me to stay in a hotel. I get to the hotel and it is the ritzy Hyatt Regency Century City Hotel. Maybe LA won’t be so bad after all!

The Wiry West

I think I have finally come to accept the World Wide Web for all the potential it has, good and bad. By “bad,” I don’t mean pictures of questionable behavior and unprofessional language on social networking sites. I don’t mean checking my email 17 times today (which I did- I know, it’s sad. Even sadder is that I counted).

I don’t mean the unparalleled dangers of communicating with and/or meeting unknown people online. I don’t mean the abundance of amoral content available everywhere online and I don’t mean the countless viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, adware, popups and spam email all throughout cyberspace.

‘Romper Round’

The romper/jumpsuit is back and hotter than ever. This trend was everywhere on the catwalk and is not about to leave the fashion scene. This style began last year but has been a major trend this year in the fashion world.

If you have not heard of the romper trend, it is a one-piece that may be short or long and have different tops including sleeveless, tube top and halter.

Getting all spacey

I can’t even begin to explain how amazing my trip to Kennedy Space Center was. Let’s just say that it didn’t work out for us to go out on the launch pad, and I’m still thrilled.

Space, the final frontier

I’m going to go out on a limb and use a phrase I don’t think I’ve ever used before, but I am so stoked on life right now!

And it’s all because next week I get to travel down to Kennedy Space Center to interview a Flagler alum for Flagler Magazine. He is doing some pretty cool things with NASA’s transition of the shuttle program to the new Ares rockets. And he is going to give us a tour of … wait for it … the launch pad with TWO shuttles on it (pictured).

How Do You Manage a Winning Franchise?

Baseball season is underway. And for those of you who don’t know me well, that means that my life now has been altered to accommodate the sport.

I’ve come to realize that baseball is more than a passion with me. It’s an addiction. From April to October, my days are spent glued to the TV watching baseball, obsessively tracking my fantasy baseball teams, attending baseball games, reading baseball news, buying baseball cards and playing MLB The Show on my Playstation. My cravings to hit the batting cages even arise more frequently.

These boots were made for splashing…

A great pair of rain boots can ensure that a rainstorm will not put a damper on your style. Since we live in Florida, this is a fashion must.

Rain boots have always been a staple in women’s wardrobes. The new styles are meant to be bright, bold, funky and fun, so don’t take yourself too seriously when wearing them. Go splash around a little.

“April Showers Bring May Flowers”

When I said this morning, “It looks like the end of the world out there,” it wasn’t an April Fool’s Day joke. It really did. Nature has really let the figurative heavens pour open and let everything it has fall on this first day of April.

When I got into my car on the way to school this morning, partially soaked, I turned on the radio to see what the traffic situation was like and what to expect out there on the roads. There were lots more accidents than on a usual morning and there were even some streets that were flooded.

Dumplings, Fireworks and Mickey Mouse

I never really understood why the Chinese had their own “New Year.” I’d heard about how China, that big, scary, far away country, had their own lunar calendar and new year celebrations AFTER January first, but never really thought about it until I got to live it! This year Chinese New Year fell on Jan. 26. This is the time of the year when all foreign teachers take their saved up yuan and hit the road (or train tracks) and explore this country while all the citizens are busy with their families. Being a teacher in China during the new year is awesome because schools have seven weeks off. Which means seven weeks of paid traveling time. Perfection.
