Kristin Nelson, new director of Career Services, aims to make Ringhaver Student Center a Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) test site in the next couple years.
This year, Nelson is holding GRE test prep workshops, which will be available later in the fall.
“[We’ll] set up a full Saturday where they understand what’s on the GRE, [and show them]how to study for it. We’ll go through vocab words, understand each aspect of the GRE and students can just sign up,” she said.
Programs like GRE workshops have been put in place because students are no longer required to take Career Education in order to graduate. Career Services, which is now under Student Services, plans to take career guidance to the student. Students can expect events such as career fairs focused on specific majors as well as classroom visits this year.
She has also started a new program called Thursdays with Employers. Starting Sept. 15, students can meet a professional from a different field of study every week and learn how they landed a job in their field.
“I’m hoping with our new push of getting outside of the classroom I still continue to build those relationships with students and watch them go from freshmen to seniors and graduate,” said Nelson.
With a degree in counseling, Nelson’s focus has always been on helping students. She started working at Flagler as an intern for Career Services. Now as director, she feels she has gone full circle with her own career and can finally focus on what she’s always wanted to do.
