Baseball sets eyes on Peach Belt debut

Head coach David Barnett is excited about the upcoming baseball season.

Entering their first season in the Peach Belt Conference ranked 10th in a preseason coaches poll, Barnett seems happy, yet determined to improve their standing.

“I expected to be ranked last,” Barnett said.

Within the Peach Belt Conference, the Saints are in the East Division among conference leaders USC Aiken and Francis Marion.

Never having faced Peach Belt Conference teams, Barnett has a lot faith in his team.

“I think we are going to do fine,” said Barnett.

With seniors Cale Owen and Zach Bove returning for their final seasons, the Saints have a good offensive team with talented hitters, according to Barnett. Bove batted .337 last season and drove in 24 RBI’s. Owen batted .314.

The team also recruited transfer students senior Dagmar Pena and junior, Jose Rohena, both good hitters.

Barnett’s goal for this season is to make it to the Conference Tournament. The Saints need to finish in the top four of the East Division to ensure a spot in the eight-team single elimination tournament. From there the winners will move on to the regional tournament and then to the World Series.
