Loans not helpful for some students

Balances becoming harder to repay thanks to higher interest rates

By Steffi Shook | gargoyle@flagler.edu

With financial aid, grants and scholarships, paying for college is a piece of cake, right? Unfortunately, funding your education isn’t as easy as receiving a check from Uncle Sam.

With federal student aid declining and strict limits on federal loans, many students are looking elsewhere to make ends meet when it comes to higher education.

Flagler hosts Adopt-a-Pet

Humane Society brings animals to campus to raise awareness, recruit volunteers

By Kelsey Mayid | gargoyle@flagler.edu

The brown and white dog wound his way among students outside Kenan, sniffing their feet and wagging his tail.

Another little black puppy wriggled and squirmed on the West Lawn, growling playfully as girls pet his belly and scratched behind his ears.

Theo, a 1-year-old pit bull/bulldog mix, and Stickers, a baby Rottweiler mix, are from the Florida East Coast Humane Society, and were visiting Flagler College for the Adopt-A-Pet event Oct. 4, which was sponsored by Flagler’s Public Relations Student Society of America chapter.

Alexandra Laycock, director of special events and volunteer coordinator for the Humane Society, was on hand to answer questions and recruit volunteers.

Study Abroad in Australia

By Capri Martinez | gargoyle@flagler.edu

Flagler is offering another study aboard trip in the summer of 2008. This one is in Australia. Students can earn three credit hours and use them for sports management or as a free elective.

On the trip, students will visit five regions in three weeks including Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane and Cairns, just to name a few. They will have an opportunity to see the Rain forest and the Great Barrier Reef, visit Steve Irwin’s zoo, and experience the Sydney Harbor and Opera House among other things.

CD Review: Hannah Montana 2

She may have two names, but she is one girl who rocks. Miley Cyrus, better known as Hannah Montana has a 2-disc cd set for any person who is willing to unleash their inner child and admit their love for the Disney Channel.

Released this summer, each of the cds included in Hannah Montana 2/Meet Miley Cyrus represents a different side of Miley Cyrus. On the pop star side, Hannah sings songs such as “Make Some Noise” which have uplifting messages directed towards anyone with a dream via acoustic guitar. Another track, “Nobody’s Perfect”, is a vivacious song, expressing the importance of never giving up, and it is one of her most popular.

Solid surfing and art wrapped up in one

By Phil Mansfield | gargoyle@flagler.edu

John Glenn ain’t your average sun-bleached blonde haired surfer kid. Growing up surfing in Ocean Grove, New Jersey, he worked on his barrel riding abilities every winter off the OG Pier. When he became old enough to start working, he began life guarding every summer at the same beach he spent his childhood at; getting to surf a lot on the job too. Eventually picking up several sponsors from Fundamentally Unstable clothing, OG Surf Shop, and Bully’s, you can now find John busting huge front-side airs at Vilano in-between Graphic Design classes. This is where the ‘not so average’ part comes in.

Never forget

By Ryan Brower | rbrower@flagler.edu

Some started because it was handed down from dad. Some started because it looked like a hobby that could be exciting and new. Some started because all their friends were doing it. Some started because they wanted to connect with the ocean.

The list goes on and on. And no matter the reason for beginning, we as surfers all know that the main attraction to surfing is the enjoyment one achieves by getting to “play” in the ocean. You cannot deny this fact. Think about it for a second: If surfing wasn’t fun, if it was a chore, or something you despised, would you still do it?

CD Review: Bruce Springsteen

The Boss is back! His first album with the E Street Band since 2002’s “The Rising,” Bruce Springsteen bursts back into the musical scene doing what he does best with his 15th energetic rock CD “Magic,” which has already left critics and fans spellbound since its release on Oct. 2.

This is an excellent album that demonstrates musically what Springsteen himself has managed flawlessly: his style is unchanged, yet unquestionably modern and relevant in today’s ever-changing music world. No kidding, I have listened to this album backward and forward 12 times. Here’s why.

The dream trip

By Phil Mansfield | gargoyle@flagler.edu

This past summer a group of thirteen Spanish studying students from Flagler College went on a semester abroad and trip of a lifetime to Costa Rica. The program was five weeks of Spanish classes in the city campus of Heredia and one week of class on the beach campus in Samara. What went down in between April 26th to June 11th this summer was one of the best times of my life, and the following is the “spark notes” version of my trip.

Movie Review: The Heartbreak Kid

Ben Stiller looked toned-down and mature in the previews I saw for the Farrelly brother’s newest comedy “The Heartbreak Kid.” As it turns out, he plays his usual quirky, uncoordinated character as Eddie Cantrow, a 40-year-old bachelor in the remake of Elaine May’s 1972 hit.

Cantrow is coerced by his sex-crazed father – played by Stiller’s real life dad, Jerry Stiller – and overly domesticated best friend (Rob Corddry) to marry Lila (Malin Akerman), a cute, seemingly classy blonde he’s only known for a couple weeks.

GuluWalk in St. Augustine

Athletes for Africa will be hosting a GuluWalk in St. Augustine on Oct. 20 to spread awareness of conflict in northern Uganda.

Flagler College Student Caitlin Eggimann is responsible for bringing GuluWalk to St. Augustine. “I was looking to participate in GuluWalk, and I contacted the leaders of Athletes for Africa,” Eggimann said, “and they asked me to take the responsibility of being in charge of GuluWalk for St. Augustine.”
