FEC construction on schedule for early July completion

Questions remain about security, exterior designs of dormitories

Questions remain as the process of transforming two of the three Florida East Coast Buildings into dormitories remains on schedule, with a completion date set for July 10.

Before the dorms open, questions regarding security, the exterior designs surrounding the buildings, and even what the buildings will be continue to linger.

Though the new dorms will offer state-of-the-art security equipment within the buildings, the level of security offered for the seven-minute walk from the new dormitories to the main campus remains up in the air.

Mel Shanks passes away

Graphic Design professor Mel Shanks passed away on Feb. 16.

According to Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs Yvan Kelly, Shanks had a fatal heart attack while driving home from the Orlando airport.

Dreaming of a real spring break

“I could really use a vacation!”

That’s a phrase heard quite often this time of year. Most students go through classes all winter, with the hope of spring vacation as their guiding light and something to look forward to.

But not students at Flagler College.

We work hard, and the only thing we have to show for it is a four-day weekend in March. That’s only two days of canceled classes, which is barely enough time to do anything.

Taking a different view on colors

Marketing studies show colors have powerful psychological effects

Although it is one of the most basic things learned in Kindergarten, colors may have more meaning and symbolism than previously thought.

The psychology, emotions and connotations behind color are at the center of a number of significant studies. Different colors have been found to be in correlation with our true thoughts, sentiments and character.

In response to the knowledge of this fact, marketers have begun studying the science behind colors and the ways they can reach the consumer through them.

Knowing when to do a little ‘faking it’

Everyone fakes it.

What’s the harm in faking, you ask? It makes you a liar. However, not every fake is a bad one. Personally, dyed hair, whitened teeth and silicone do not particularly bother me.

Lying to parents is also acceptable when being caught in a compromising position — just don’t forget which lie you used. It is when certain types of insincerity cause undue harm to the victim that I have a bone to pick.

Flagler focuses on alerting students

Campus safety, e2 Campus system back in spotlight after NIU shooting

Flagler College administration hopes changes and improvements to security on campus will help prevent a tragedy like the Northern Illinois University shooting two weeks ago.

According to Joe Provenza, director of technology services, the e2 Campus system is a way to alert as many people as possible to an emergency situation on campus.

CNN’s Crowley to attend COM week

The Communication Department has attracted some big names to its third annual Communication Week including keynote speaker Candy Crowley, a CNN senior political correspondent in Washington, D.C.

The Public Relations Student Society of America will host Communication Week from March 17 to March 20.

Professionals in the fields of public relations, journalism and broadcasting will come to Flagler to share international and national expertise with students.

Career Services helps seniors, future graduates find jobs

As seniors are getting ready for the end of this semester, many are looking for jobs – some haven’t started. According to Career Services, last semester, 50 percent of seniors had jobs coming out of graduation and 50 percent were still looking.

CareerSpot is an online database that contains every potential employer that the college knows about. Students can access it by going to www.flagler.edu/careerservices.

Future of FRAG uncertain for students

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist has proposed a budget cut that has the potential to affect all future Flagler College students from Florida.

Crist has threatened to make the largest cut to the Florida Resident Access Grant in its 29-year history, according to The Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida.

If the proposal goes through, 15,000 students will be out of the program, and $47 million in tuition will not be available any longer, ICUF said.

Tuesday Night Topic forum has poor turnout

The Tuesday Night Topic forum last week covered stress management.

Despite the invaluable information offered during the forum, “marketing problems” were to blame for a poor turnout. The event drew only one student.

Many students strolled past Ponce 1 on their way to the dining hall unaware of the forum, but seemed somewhat curious as to what was taking place inside.
