Flagler College offers a social media class that informs students how social networking can be used to create a brand for yourself and the company you represent.
Carolyn Adams, a communication major with a track in public relations, uses social media to her advantage.
“I would say social networking is the gateway into succeeding and establishing yourself as a brand in the business world,” Adams said.
She was a student in the social media class last semester and said she learned many valuable tools that she will carry with her into the business world.
Professor Rosemary Tutt, a public relations practitioner and professor of the Social Media class, believes that students can benefit from social media if they use it the right way.
“A Facebook page can be a college graduate’s greatest asset or worst enemy,” Tutt said. “It depends on how you use it.”
According to Tutt, Facebook is the most popular social media platform today, and potential employers will check the content of your page. She stressed the importance of graduates’ need to eliminate posts and pictures that could be less than flattering.
“It’s time to start thinking about the ‘business of social media’ and possibly create a new page dedicated to that purpose,” she said.
