This February, senior Jonathan Tallman will head to Milwaukee as one of the top interns for Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, a company he learned about at last year’s annual Career and Graduate School Fair.
Tallman went to the fair to see “what opportunities were available… after Flagler.” He just introduced himself and showed interest in the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, and he was asked to come in for an interview.
“I had no idea there was an internship opportunity,” Tallman said. He said he didn’t realize that a financial company would hire a psychology major.
“All of these people at the career fair know Flagler, and they want Flagler students,” Tallman said.
Part-time, seasonal and full-time jobs, as well as internship positions will be available, according to Director of Career Services Jenny Preffer. The fair will be held Feb. 14, in the gym from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Most of the positions will be regional, but many will be national companies that can lead to jobs elsewhere, Preffer said.
“The best thing a career fair can do for students is to give them a chance to put themselves in front of the people that are hiring,” she said.
Preffer recommends dressing for an interview, which includes removing all non-ear piercings and covering tattoos. Students should also carry many general resumes on 24 pound bond paper.
Preffer said the fair will not only help students receive a job but also allow students to “see what is out there and how companies work.”
Businesses pertaining to every major will be at the fair, including Alachua County Public Schools, Clear Channel Broadcasting, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the Jacksonville Jaguars, Northwestern Mutual Financial Network and St. Johns County Mental Health.
Graduate and laws schools will also attend with information about programs offered.
