The Flagler women’s golf team opened their fall season Sept. 23-24 competing in the Lady Falcon Invitational in Ormond Beach, finishing 11th overall.
According to coach Taylor Mott, the golf team only has 45 days in which they can play during the fall season. This year the
season started Sept. 18 and will end Oct. 31.
Mott said she was pleased with the team’s performance and noted the scores of freshman Kaitlyn Edwards and senior Abby Gulla. Edwards finished 38th and Gulla finished 48th, a personal best according to Mott.
With the transition into NCAA, Mott hopes it will help with numbers on the team. The current team has eight members. Mott said status is important in golf.
“Becoming a Div. II team will help attract players from the north to Flagler,” Mott said.
Also, competing on the NCAA level means the golf team might play former national champion teams, including Rollins College.
Mott said the fall season used to be a training season, but now it counts for almost half of the full season.
“It is getting harder to find courses to play on in the spring,” Mott said.
