Softball PBC preview

The Flagler Saints Softball team is well on their way to a successful year on the field.

With great work ethic and challenging practices, the new program is on the right track to many Peach Belt Conference victories.

“Our goal is to go all the way this year by winning our conference and regional games,” said senior Kathy Cabrera.
“We have a great chance of winning a lot of our games in the Peach Belt Conference this year.”

Last year, the Saints matched up with several conference teams to prepare for this season.

“We’ve played teams last year in our conference such as; Columbus State, Armstrong Atlantic, North Georgia, and Georgia Southwestern, which will prepare us for our season,” said sophomore Kaycee Lisa.

“We have a lot of depth this year and I think everyone will get the chance to shine,” sophomore Kirsten Immel says.

There are seven seniors on the team of twenty this year and many of these players will get the opportunity to contribute to a successful season.

There is young talent in the ranks as well, and head coach Kristen Overton believes they will step up and help lead the team to victory.

“Senior Brittney Hatem has stepped up this year to be a great leader and an all around great player,” Overton said.

Hatem is leading the team batting .441 with 9 RBI’s and has already hit three home runs this season.
“So far, we are 8-4 and there is no comparison between this year and last year,” Overton said. “We are a lot more consistent and confident.”

The players are starting to find out what it takes to win.

“One approach we take is, in order to sweep the series you have to win the first game,” says Junior Brittany Simmons.

With conference team and rival school Armstrong Atlantic in their future, the Saints are determined to overcome hardships and prove that they are a contender in the PBC.

“The opportunity to make it all the way to regionals is definitely there,” Overton said. “We just need to believe in ourselves and play up to our full potential.”

The team’s success this season will rely on execution and confidence.

“The key this season is to make sure we do all the little things right and bring all aspects of the game together when we play,” Overton said. “We are the underdogs and need to believe in ourselves this season.”

The softball team will play USC Aiken away on March 7th in the PBC opener.
