Saints set records at Daytona

For years, women’s golf at Flagler has taken a backseat to other sports, but outgoing head coach Taylor Mott thinks that is about to change.

“I think it’s just a confidence thing,” Mott said. “The turnover in women’s golfers every year is so high because of the amount of time they have to put in and because of the scholarship money that is available. There’s just not very many women’s golfers.”

Mott is stepping down just as golf coach and will hand over the reigns to Betsy Larey, who has been the assistant coach for the past two years.

“We’ve got these five freshman and one sophomore on the team,” Mott said. “They’ve kind of just gotten used to her and she’s really done an incredible job with them. That’s what this program has needed all along is stability.”

The Saints fired a two-round 651 at the Daytona Bash at the Beach to set a new Flagler record. They also set the record for a single round with a 325 on the final day.

Kaitlyn Edwards led the team, shooting an eight over par 150, good for a tie for seventh place. Laura Martellino shot a 15 over 157.

Larey will take over the duties as coach of the team in the fall.
