‘Cinderella’ is new twist on a classic

Theatre Arts Department to stage musical version of children’s fairy tale

Children’s Theatre, an elective class offered within the theatre department, is working on giving an old classic a new twist.

Cinderella’s Glass Slipper is based on the fairy tale that has enchanted audiences for years. Most of the original characters are there, plus a few new ones, as well as a lively and entertaining musical score and an enjoyable dance number.

“It’s a charming little story, and a much more interesting approach than the Disney version,” said Phyllis Gibbs, director and Theatre Arts Department chair.

The Children’s Theatre class meets twice a week for three hours at a time. During this time, the students rehearse their music and dance numbers all while learning the basics of producing a show for children.

Some of the new characters include a brave mouse, a hesitant cat, a new set of silly step-sisters, an apprentice and an amazing pumpkinhead. Of course, the Fairy Godmother and Prince Charming are going to be a part of the action as well.

“All the actors are very good and have a very refined comedic style that complement each other nicely, and makes this musical different for each performance,” stage manager Alicia Mangelsdorf said.

“It’s a story we all know and love. It is sure to be fun and leave the audience with a smile,” said senior Beckie Hawkins, who plays one of the step-sisters.

Performances will be held Tuesday, March 13, and Thursday, March 15 during the Children’s Theatre class time for elementary schools that will be taking a field trip to Flagler just to see the performance.

Performances for the public will be Friday, March 16, at 7 p.m., and March 17 and 18 at 2 p.m. All performances will be held in the Flagler College Auditorium. Tickets are $5 at the box office during the performance days.

Following the Saturday, March 17, performance, a special tea party will be held with Cinderella herself and other characters of the play including the Prince, the Ugly Stepsisters, and the Fairy Godmother.

It will give children and adults alike the chance to mingle with some of their favorite characters and spend the afternoon collecting autographs and taking pictures. Space is limited for the tea party so a reservation will be required. The cost is $5, not including the ticket price.
