Pedal with purpose

A big trend on campus lately has been bicycles. Whether it is recreational or “gang related,” more and more Flagler students are parking their cars and peddling their way through life.

On April 22, these students will be able to do it with a purpose. The Katie Caples Foundation is hosting its second annual donor awareness 100 K bicycling event called the Katie Ride For Life. The ride will start on Amelia Island and the day-long event will take cyclists through Big Talbot, Little Talbot and Fort George Islands.

Riders will also have the opportunity to do a leg through Amelia Island Plantation and try the new 2.5-mile bike path that runs though Little Talbot State Park.
The Katie Ride For Life will raise funds to increase awareness of the importance of organ and tissue donation. “The decision to become an organ and tissue donor is very important,” said Kathleen Giery of LifeQuest Organ Recovery Services, which is the local organ donor program for northern Florida.

Rotaract art auction

Flagler College Rotaract students have teamed up with the Energy Lab Art Gallery to hold a silent art auction benefit on April 15. They are asking artists to donate any type of original work for the event. Proceeds from the auction will go to the St. Augustine Youth Services to build a new home for the children in their care.

SAYS is a non-profit organization that helps local boys ages six to 18 who suffer from abuse or neglect. It not only provides therapy but also a safe place for the boys to live in order to recover.
Volunteers of all kinds are still needed for the event. Anyone wishing to donate art must make sure that it is ready for display and drop it off at the Energy Lab on King Street through April 12 from noon to 5 p.m.

Musicians, poets, writers and other entertainers are also needed to perform at the auction.

T-shirt winners announced

The winners of the Flagler’s Legacy T-shirt contest were announced on April 7.
Tied for first place were Alison Miller’s design featuring the Flagler skyline and Andrew Hedman’s lion crest design. Lindsey Ford’s frog design came in third place.
Both of the winning designs will be on sale soon in Flagler’s Legacy, which plans on running the contest again next year.

Sevilla Street to be one-way

As of April 10, Sevilla Street will be one-way south only, from Valencia Street to King Street, and will remain so for the duration of construction on the new student center.
Parking along Sevilla Street will be for construction vehicles only, and all other vehicles will be towed.

In addition, the sidewalk from Markland House to Sevilla Street will be closed to pedestrian traffic for safety reasons. The sidewalk closure will also remain in effect for the duration of construction.
Students, faculty, and staff will be required to walk around the block using either King Street or Valencia Street.
