Flagler women’s basketball coach hopes team can get back on track

The Flagler women’s basketball team continues their struggles with their recent home loss to Montevallo.

The Saints are now a disappointing 2-17 on the season, with a current seven game losing streak.

Coming into the season, the Saints expectations were very high.

“I felt we had an opportunity to make some noise in the Peach Belt this year as several of the teams in the league graduated many seniors from the previous season,” Erika Lang-Montgomery, head coach of the women’s basketball team, said.

The anticipation of the season for the Saints was due to their depth of a 16 player roster, which gave the Saints many threats on both sides of the court.

But, the Saints, plagued by injuries, currently only have a nine player roster.

“Combine the injuries with inexperience, the result is our current record,” Lang-Montgomery said.

The Saints will have some much needed help with sophomore forward Shelbi Lindsey returning to the starting lineup after missing five games with a medical condition.

Lindsey is the Saints leading scorer averaging 8.5 points per game.

“I anticipate she will be able to pick up where she left off,” Lang-Montgomery said.

The Saints have only seven regular season games left and they will look to finish their disappointing season out strong.

Even if the Saints cannot find a way to turn their season around, Lang-Montgomery knows that this season will only be an opportunity for her team to get better for the future.

“I am extremely excited and optimistic about the future of the Flagler women’s basketball team,” Lang-Montgomery said.

Lang-Montgomery has a good reason to be optimistic and excited, considering the freshman class is leading the Saints in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals.

On Feb. 4th the Saints will be away at Augusta State, but will be back home on Wednesday, Feb. 8th at 5:30 p.m. against Armstrong Atlantic.
