For Flagler College junior Joshua Weaver, TOMS shoes are more than casual and comfortable shoes that complete every outfit and represent personal style—they promote a worthy cause that affects everyone, from the first world to the third.
“I first heard about TOM shoes when I was a senior in high school [in 2008],” he said. “I had a friend in a band that was sponsored by TOM shoes. I read their mission statement, loved their style and the one for one business model. I thought: ‘I love that idea. I’m going to buy them.’ ”

It was the only time in my life I actually thought I wanted to die. I crawled from the bottom bunk in my tiny Georgetown dorm I was sharing with another girl for two months last summer. I grabbed my cell phone and dialed the one person I call when I do not know what to do – my mother.

For Nelsie Gordon, Flagler College theatre arts major, directing a one-act play for her senior conservatory class also means preparing for motherhood. She and her husband, Brandon, are expecting their first child in June.
“His name is Ethan and he’s been in four shows,” Gordon, 20, said. “I’m nervous about the labor part, but, honestly, no matter how ready you think you are or aren’t, you have to make yourself ready [for parenthood].”

Webster’s dictionary defines a void as: not occupied; vacant; not inhabited; deserted; containing nothing. That sounds about right.
I define a void as: sadness; depression; loneliness; fear; defeat.
For as long as I can remember, I have tried to fill the void. I’m always trying to keep myself distracted so I won’t feel like I’m alone.
It starts when I go home. I check Facebook and I have no new notifications. I check my e-mail and see that no one needs me for anything.
My homework is complete, my house is tidy…The panic sets in.

A Department of Corrections number of V02152 separated my mommy, an inmate, from a free woman for 14 long years as I grew up and apart from her.
You see, this meant that Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving and many other holidays were spent together behind bars. And the things that we could not do behind bars, such as my first bike ride, birthday parties, my first play, or any of my athletic events, were almost just wasted stories for her to hear about. She had to miss out on watching me grow, meeting my friends, helping me through hard times and giving me advice that I knew I could trust.

Flagler College men’s basketball finished their second year in the Peach Belt Conference with mixed results. There were plenty of highs this season, but ultimately the season ended in another disappointment.
The Saint’s finished with a record of 10-16. At home, the team played consistently the entire season, posting a 7-7 record. The real troubles were on the road, where the team finished only 2-7.Peach Belt Conference play proved to be a difficult task throughout the season as the team finished with only four conference wins. Flagler failed to make the conference tournament for the second year in a row.
These photos were selected as finalists for the Gargoyle’s 2011 Anthology. The gold and silver awards went to Luis Mark Gonzalez Jr., and the honorable mention went to Alexandra Maisch.

The world is filled with millions of sports fans that live and breathe sports. My whole life I have followed sports, played sports, and looked up to certain athletes. When I hear about how we might not have a NFL season next year due to labor strikes it really grinds my gears. I mean what would a whole year be like without NFL football?
