Democracy may not end at the ballot box but it sure is one of the starting points!

The ONLY time an elected official listens to your voice is when they're up for reelection. You can rally as many people you want for a cause, but if you're not going to vote to make it so, then the politician doesn't need to listen.

People will rally for a cause for so long until they want to get back to their normal life. Asking someone to do something every day to keep a cause alive is more inconvenient to them than asking them to study the issues and pick the right candidate every few years.

As you get older, you realize talk has to be backed up with action. You might say your life is being pulled in a thousand different directions. Well, so is everyone else. If you don't engage them, how will they know you need each other.
