Despite missing links lady Saints fight for conference title

It’s been a roller coaster ride for the Lady Saints basketball team this year, which after a tough loss to Webber International and an overtime loss to Edward Waters have a record of 9-13 and a 1-3 record in the conference.
After a three game winning streak early in January that showed great promise for the rest of the semester, the Lady Saints have lost four consecutive games, three against conference foes and are facing an uphill battle to get back into the conference title picture.
“We have had some bad luck. We lost a great point guard and a terrific NCAA Division I transfer center,” Head Coach Craig Douglass said. “With everything that has happened, the girls still have the talent and ability to achieve their goal of winning the conference championship.”
The loss of point guard Sarah Hately has hit the Saints hard as they continue to struggle to find the point guard play that had been a concern in years past.
Hately had been averaging 12 points per game, and her leadership was a key factor in the team’s first half success.
Hately returned to her home in Australia at the completion of the first semester. The Saints are now looking for other members to step up and play key roles.
Junior Forward Meaggen Anderson was recently named Florida Sun Conference player of the week for back-to-back weeks in January.
“Meaggen has really stepped up. She’s a coach’s dream,” assistant coach Aaron Stewart said.
“She works hard day in and day out ,and is a top performer who is doing extremely well.”
Junior Jamie Allenbaugh also continues to impress, averaging nearly 15 points per game.
“I’m really proud of the leadership coming from the upperclassmen,” sophomore guard Meredith Tehan said. “The younger girls are also doing a great job of stepping up and playing some crucial minutes in important games.”
In the upcoming weeks the Lady Saints are faced with many critical games to determine their conference standing. On Feb. 4, the ladies take on Florida Memorial and Feb. 11, they face Savannah College of Art and Design, two conference match-ups that could make or break the season.
