Terry Nails hosts WFCF Radio Show

What has happened to the traditional radio style of good music, good artists, and as little interruption from the music as possible?

Today, radio stations interrupt the little bit of music that there is with constant commercials and announcements.

Often times there seems to be more advertisements than music and frustrated listeners have switched off their radios.

But there is now an alternative to commercial packed radio, and it’s all about surf music.

It’s called “The Big Surf Show,” hosted by life-long musician and surfer Terry Nails. You can catch the refreshing break on 88.5 FM, WFCF Flagler College Radio, Monday nights at 9:30 p.m.

Nails played bass for bands like Killerwatt, Tommy Tutone (best known for their 1982 hit song “Jenny 867-5309), Ozzie Osbourne, the Pointer Sisters, Steve Jones and Charlie Musselwhite.

Now living in St. Augustine, he has created a show on WFCF that reaches back in time and sends across the airwaves an array of music from timely classics like “Surfer Special,” to the punk/rock and instrumental sounds that have progressed into today.

Nails brings a generally uninterrupted two and a half hour block of music that has embodied surfing over time.

“I try to talk as little as possible,” Nails said. “ I enjoy radio with no commercials, but I’ll introduce the artists and maybe give a little background on them.”

With a mix of music it is rare to hear a song that actually has lyrics.

Nails focuses on more of an instrumental based sound, like the unmistakable twang of the surf guitar.

“I may only play three to four songs a night that actually have lyrics,” he said.
